The Agafay Desert is the desert most visitors to Marrakech actually see. It sits 30–40 km south-west of the city, about 40 minutes by road, and in one afternoon you can ride a quad over its bare hills, watch the sun drop behind the Atlas Mountains from a camel, and eat dinner under more stars than you have seen in years. What it is not is the Sahara — and knowing that difference is the key to enjoying it.
This guide covers everything we wish we had known before our first visit: what the landscape really looks like, which experience is worth your money, what things cost in 2026, when to go and how to avoid the tourist traps.

What is the Agafay Desert, really?
Agafay is a hamada: a rocky plateau where wind has stripped away almost all the sand, leaving rolling hills of compacted earth and stone in shades of beige, ochre and pink. There are no tall golden dunes here. Instead you get a vast, lunar landscape, sparse scrub, dry riverbeds, the turquoise lake of Lalla Takerkoust on its western edge and — on clear days — the snow-capped High Atlas on the horizon.
For many travellers that is a pleasant surprise rather than a disappointment: the light at sunset is extraordinary, the ground is firm enough for quads and buggies, and you get a genuine desert atmosphere without the 9–10 hour drive to Merzouga. If seeing sand dunes is your non-negotiable, read our comparison Agafay vs Sahara (Merzouga) before booking.

- Price: from ≈ €30–45

- Best for: couples, families

Best for adrenaline
- Duration: 1–2 h riding (half-day with transfer)
- Price: from ≈ €35–60

Buggy safari
Most comfortable thrill

How to get to the Agafay Desert from Marrakech
There is no public bus to the camps, so you have three realistic options:
- A tour with pick-up (easiest): almost every activity on GetYourGuide includes return transport from your hotel or a central meeting point.
- A private transfer or taxi: expect roughly €50–80 per vehicle for a private transfer, or 250–350 MAD one way by grand taxi. Agree the return time before you leave — finding a taxi back at night is hard.
- A rental car: the drive takes 40–60 minutes via the Amizmiz road; the last kilometres to some camps are on dirt tracks.
Map, routes, weather and safety tips are in our practical guide to getting to Agafay.
Flying in from the UK or Ireland
Marrakech is roughly 3.5–4 hours from London, Manchester, Bristol, Edinburgh or Dublin, with plenty of direct flights depending on the season. Land in the morning and you can be in Agafay for sunset the same day. Morocco usually keeps the same time as the UK in summer and is one hour ahead in winter; during Ramadan clocks go back an hour, so double-check the pick-up time on your booking.
Best time to visit
| Season | Day / night temperatures | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Spring (Mar–May) | 20–30 °C / 10–18 °C | Best season — green tints after rain, clear Atlas views |
| Summer (Jun–Aug) | 32–42 °C / 20–25 °C | Go only for sunset and evening; pools are a bonus |
| Autumn (Sep–Nov) | 22–32 °C / 12–20 °C | Excellent — warm days, pleasant evenings |
| Winter (Dec–Feb) | 15–22 °C / 3–10 °C | Crisp light, snowy Atlas; nights are cold, bring a warm layer |
Whatever the season, the magic hour is the last hour before sunset. Every good tour is timed around it.
Day trip or overnight?
A half-day or evening trip (4–6 hours) is enough to see the landscape, do one or two activities and enjoy dinner. It is the right choice if you have only 2–3 days in Marrakech. An overnight stay is worth it if you want peace and stars: the day-trippers leave around 10 pm and the desert goes silent. Compare the options in our Agafay day trip guide.

Mistakes to avoid
- Booking a midday quad in July: it will be 40 °C. Choose a late-afternoon slot.
- Expecting Sahara dunes: enjoy Agafay for what it is — or plan Merzouga separately.
- Forgetting a warm layer: from October to April temperatures drop fast after sunset.
- Choosing only on price: very cheap packages often cut corners on food, group size and helmets. Read recent reviews.
- No return plan: if you go independently, fix your taxi back before you leave Marrakech.
